Raimo Utriainen Art Museum
Course: Introduction to public buildings

Design task:
The task was to design a small museum for a permanent exhibition of Raimo Utriainen’s sculptures.

Design proposal:
Most of the exhibited objects are sculptures created using a technique where rectangular pieces of metal are stacked on top of each other. In some of the sculptures straight building blocks create curved forms, often combining curved and straight geometrical forms. Other sculptures are more solid and cube-like with interesting shimmering and transparent qualities.

In my design proposal, I sought for a solution that would allow the different qualities of Raimo Utrainen’s sculptures to be experienced. I aimed to create a space for contemplation. The building offers different perception possibilities of the sculptures. Indeed, direct and indirect lights alternate as well the background of nature with the neutral background of the walls. The direct light emphasizes the shimmering properties whereas the indirect light stresses the transparency dimension and silhouettes.

At the core of the building there is a small intimate exhibition space for small bronze sculptures created by Utriainen at an early stage in his career.
