Helsinki design week information pavilion
Wood and Glass studio 2004-2005

Design task:
The task was to design a small information pavilion out of wood and glass for Helsinki design week. No information was to be physically displayed in the pavilion. The idea was to have digital information transmitted wirelessly to visitors’ mobile phones, as they approach the pavilion.

Design proposal:
Given the immaterial and virtual form of the information I decided to use the same virtual language in my design proposal for the pavilion. In this proposal surfaces with different levels of reflexivity play with the boundaries between the inside and the outside in such a way that one can no longer distinguish between them, at the same time creating new possibilities for interaction.

Viewed from the side the pavilion has a material presence. The enlarged shadows of the visitors are cast from the inside on the translucent walls. When seen from the front, the semi-transparent reflective surfaces create the illusion of an endless tunnel which makes the pavilion extend beyond its physical boundaries. The inside and outside blend together so that people on opposite sides of the glass wall appear to be on the same side.
